With the assistance of F.R.I.E.N.D.S an NGO organization, we able to identify areas that required assistance.
Areas that were visited were within BA and the interior of BA, as seen in the photos attached the destructive force of the flooding. This flooding destroyed 60% of the sugar cane fields and other agriculture crops damaging at least F$8 million including water resource management and livestock estimated around F$4 million.
This flooding poses a huge risk of disease outbreaks including typhoid, dengue, leptospirosis and diarrhea. People so concerned with trying to recover their losses, they tend to forget to watch out for their health.
Infrastructure damages causing delays to supply of food & water to the people, creates frustration, and a panic due to shortage of Food items, beddings, mattress, and the supply of water – most basic items, thus some organization are taking opportunity of the demand.
About 8,000 evacuees were residing in 130 evacuation centers and were mostly in the western division.
The official death toll of the floods stands at 11 of which 6 were children. Three were buried alive in a landslide and seven drowned.
PAFL in conjunction with the principal partners headed by the GM – Martin O’Connor visiting the Western Division saw the destruction of people’s belongings, property, and life style that left people shocked and lost for words. Thoughts of what to do and how to continue living, was a question of those affected, having to understand the situation, need and assistance required to provide hope for them.
GM – Martin O’Connor saw the need to ensure that what was given for assistance was getting to the REALLY needy people.
Distribution of food rations, mattress, bed sheets and water was done on Friday 23rd Jan & Saturday 24th Jan 09.
PAFL in conjunction with PFL/TOL/SWIRES would like to acknowledge and thank the following for their assistance:-
